New Commision:Monumento | Dutch National Opera & Ballet
World Premiere: September 10, 2026

A new creation by Wicklund for the Legacies program, Monumento is a physical exploration of devotion and transformation, set to the music of Willem Jeths. Featuring a striking visual landscape designed by Tatyana van Walsum (Wardrobe) and Wijnand van der Horst (Lighting), the work challenges the boundaries of classical structure through a lens of weighted, rhythmic release, partnering equality, and the dancers' ability to transcend and become united as one organic body in space.

Originally created as a duet under the support of Ballet BC's "Take Form", Kirsten has adapted Overcast into a high-tension ensemble work for six dancers for Staatstheater Nürnberg.

The piece serves as a meditation on "shadow / darkness / light"; a place where classical architecture fractures to make room for groove and distortion.

From quiet, translucent boundaries to the explosive release of the full stage, this ensemble evolution explores the luminous instability of form and the collective power of movement within a changing atmosphere.

The Legacies program marks a significant opening for the Dutch National Ballet's 2026–2027 season, placing Wicklund’s world premiere alongside three iconic pillars of the ballet world:

George Balanchine’s Symphony in C: A glittering tribute to the grandeur and technical virtuosity of the classical tradition.

Hans van Manen’s Simple Things: A dynamic and masterfully clear quartet that serves as a cornerstone of the Dutch choreographic legacy. In this company of masters,

Toer van Schayk’s Requiem: A poignant revival set to Mozart’s masterpiece, celebrated for its powerful ensemble scenes and emotional resonance.

Monumento serves as a bridge to the future—reimagining the heritage of the form through a modern, visceral lens. In collaboration with the Dutch National Opera Studio, the work features live vocal performances, further weaving the dancers into the architectural landscape of Jeths’ score.
